Who can explain to me how the Incr to full backup conversion works. If for example i do a full backup of a VMware cluster under a certain subclient the next backup would be a incremental. If however i create a new subclient (under the same backupset) will the next incremental backup remain a Incremental or will it now become a Full ? Also if i took a full without any other scheduled backups to follow how long will that Full come into play for if i then added a incremental. I presume it would remain for the retention policy but i’m not certain. Thanks for any advice
Hi Up114743,
To address your queries directly.
Since the implementation of VM-centric clients, the same VM moving between subclients should retain the history as it is associated to a VM-centric client. This will be the case unless the VMWare client pre-dates this feature. You can confirm if you have VM-centric clients by confirming the VMs you protect are listed as clients in the Commcell. It is worth noting that if you did end up with a full backup deduplication should be able to cover the vast majority of duplicate blocks, either way.
Retention for streaming backups follows cycles, so if you only have 1 full and 1 incremental they will remain indefinitely. Once a full or synthetic full is run again, it will then start implement retention policies.
There’s a diagram on this doc that really helps visualize how CV retention works.
